Curl for a cause - raise funds for your favorite charity and awareness for your organization. Gather up four or more friends, co-workers or relatives to compete in this great event. Pick a charity of your choice and raise donations. Then come down and curl! Teams get points for dollars raised and rocks scored; the team with the highest total gets bragging rights and keeps the trophy for a year (sorry, like the Stanley Cup you must bring it back). Seasoned curlers coach (and still get your name on the trophy when your team wins).
The Charity Challenge:
- is for non-curlers. At least 3 members of the 4 person team must be non-curlers. One person may have up to one year experience
- is an exciting fund raiser
- is winter sport at its best
- welcomes spectators. Bring signs and cheer for your favorite team!
On Saturday, March 7, 30 curlers and coaches took to the ice to compete for the coveted Biogenics/Sew What Utica Curling Club Corporate Charity Challenge trophy. The enthusiastic novice curlers raised $3,438 for 4 different charities.
Congratulations to the winning team "Pre-Fab Four" of Titan Homes who raised $2,502 for their charity Blessings in a Backpack! Team members: Dennis Basler, Joe Sitts, John Copelitti, Coleen Lewis; coaches John and Laura Jacon.
Other charities that benefited from the event include the American Heart Association and the Assumption Church Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen, curled by Willow Rock Brewing Co. and Frank Sylvester's Toast respectively.
It was of special interest that participants came from as far as Delhi, NY and just west of Danbury, CT to curl for their cause with promises to be back because of the fun experience.
A sincere thank you to our title sponsors Biogenics and Sew What and all of the participants for a fun event. With the services of the ice crew, bartenders, kitchen staff, coaches and volunteers a great time was had by all in this the 16th year of the running of this event.
